Is OpenAI (CODEX) killing programming skill or Improving its Efficiency?

AI research company OpenAI has released a new machine learning tool that translates plain English language text into code. The software is called Codex and is designed to speed up the work of professional programmers, as well as help amateurs get started coding. THE VERGE

“We’ve created an improved version of OpenAI Codex, our AI system that translates natural language to code, and we are releasing it through our API in private beta starting today.

Codex is the model that powers GitHub Copilot, which we built and launched in partnership with GitHub a month ago.

Proficient in more than a dozen programming languages, Codex can now interpret simple commands in natural language and execute them on the user’s behalf—making it possible to build a natural language interface to existing applications. We are now inviting businesses and developers to build on top of OpenAI Codex through our API.

However, OpenAI Codex is a descendant of GPT-3; and its training data contains both natural language and billions of lines of source code from publicly available sources, including code in public GitHub repositories. OpenAI Codex is most capable in Python, but it is also proficient in over a dozen languages including JavaScript, Go, Perl, PHP, Ruby, Swift and TypeScript, and even Shell.

It has a memory of 14KB for Python code, compared to GPT-3 which has only 4KB—so it can take into account over 3x as much contextual information while performing any task.” OPENAI BLOG REPORTED

Essentially, Codex is the advanced AI system that built on the feature of git copilot. And it is trained on basically all the public code on GitHub, among other repositories.

OpenAI’s Brockman and Codex lead Wojciech Zaremba when demonstrating the program to us online yesterday , they used Codex to first create a simple website and then a rudimentary game. Which was AMAZING, flexible and time saver. Watch the official testing here : https://lnkd.in/enkxHiiK

HOW DOES CODEX API WORKS?

In all simplicity, all you will do is to give Codex your instructions in plain text and it will generate lines of code for you which you could use.

Codex doesn’t create a challenge or competition for them. Codex enables everybody to learn and apply code interactively. Codex will not kill coders, like cinema hasn’t killed theater. Like GPT-3 doesn’t kill writers.

Yes, it transforms our way of work, but it augments our creativity and does not replace us. Both approaches (AI-driven and genuinely human) can exist in parallel. Codex allows you to code more efficiently, effectively, and educationally.
